I am growing potatoes, Kale, broad beans, borlotti beans, strawberries, tomatoes, courgettes and blackberries this year. We had a very bad summer last year so it was bad for growing vegetables. Hoping for better this year. It must be great to be able to get away from people like you can do.
To get plants to grow, you have to observe and follow the signs in Nature. Sometimes, Nature does not give you everything and you have to help Her out. Plants are like any living thing. They love attention. They enjoy your breath of sweet CO2. They feel your touch and wiggle with delight when you slowly sprinkle the water on them by hand from an old galvanized bucket.
Folks think I am a weirdo when they see me squatting low to dig into the dirt with my fingers so it is loose around the plants. When it rains, the dirt gets packed down and you have to loosen it up. I have found that the best time to do this is after the rain but before the dirt dries out, get in there with your hands and feel the soil condition.
I send a prayer to Pachamama to bless your food patch so you have a bounty of plenty, my friend. And yes, getting up in the hills away from the madding crowd is a pure euphoric pleasure. It is why I hike.
There are so many plants at the garden centre because they haven't been able to sell any due to the weather. I filled my car up and now I've filled my garden up. Pansys, Primroses, Bellis, low ones, tall ones , hollyhocks, some herbs, too much of everything but my garden at least has lots of colour now. Very cool with the icons.
