Mr and Mrs Neptune by LordLJCornellPhotos Mr and Mrs Neptune by LordLJCornellPhotos
This is in a house in Herculaneum. The wall mosaic shows Neptune with his bride Amphitrite (or Venus ? )

-(Quickly checks Wikipedia)-
Not Venus. If this is Roman, that would be Neptune and Salacia, goddess of saltwater. Amphitrite is Greek, wife of Poseidon.

Venus' Greek counterpart is Aphrodite.

It's a lovely mural. I wish we could see more of the surrounding wall, I mean if it wasn't so damaged.

My information came from the brand new publication The Excavations Of Herculaneum edited by Mario Pagano which I bought in Herculaneum.
Also from the archeologist of 30 years experience who guided us round Herculaneum.
They should certainly know more than I do.
This room is in a house called Casa di Nettuno e Anfitrite.   The house of Neptune and Amphitrite.

This room is beautiful. I wish there was more of the fresco left too but anything that is there at all is a miracle. To the left, out of sight (though I do have a picture of it) is the Tricinium_nymphaeum with the masks of the Maenad and two old men. It is very beautiful and I will post it soon.

Marvelous design, but, to me, the fresco to the right is so beautiful and outstanding .

Wow that is so beautiful. Was that restored or is that how it aged?

It is the original mosaic. In 2012 it had some conservation work where some of the old mortar was removed and some of the pieces were secured in place but no real restoration has been done. This is basically how it looks 2000 years on. Not bad eh? The colours are so vivid. I have a close up of it if you'd like to see it.

I can't tell you how amazing it is to be able to walk around Pompeii and Herculaneum in the footsteps of the Romans and to see the rooms in the houses
with the beautiful frescos.
