The ancient wood by LordLJCornellPhotos The ancient wood by LordLJCornellPhotos
This was taken in Wistman's Wood. It is ancient woodland of stunted oaks covered in moss and lichens as are the boulders laying thick on the ground. You have to be careful where you tread.
This woodland is in Dartmoor National Park in Devon in the Southwest of England.

“Scarce hoarier seems the ancient Wood

Whose shivered trunks of age declare

What scath of tempests they have stood

In the rock’s crevice rooted there;

Yet still young foliage, fresh and fair,

Springs forth each mossy bough to dress,

And bid e’en Dartmoor’s valleys share

A Forest-wilderness“.

Sophie Dixon -1829

We have places like this in Oregon, albeit thicker tundra for the most part. Great shot.

Somehow moss just seems to make things look older.  Older in a good way.

I agree
this is an ancient woodland though so they actually are incredibly old :)

Some of the places I've lived/worked at had forests like this.  Quite old and lots of moss.  Helped give them a timeless feel.

Clearly a trip to the UK is in order.  When I have the time and the money (which will not be anytime remotely soon).  My sister spent a month in the UK several years ago and loved it.

It's very kind of you to say :)
ive been here before but this time I took my tripod and did a proper shoot
it was low light so the tripod was really essential
it is better in here in low light though as it can be very difficult to control
the contrast on a bright sunny day here even though there is a lot of cover.

No problem. :)
hah I same thing for me, I found out the hard way how hard it is to shoot in low light, but I noticed how beautiful it was, we need the sun, but overcast days and very shaded areas have their own charm.
My first day in that area I went light as I had to trek through a steep incline almost on all fours to get to it, and after shooting a couple hundred shots, I sadly found that most were unusable because of motion blur.

huh, I have a similar scene, in one of my photos, but I believe yours came out a bit better. It's surprisingly hard to get good exposure and sharpness throughout, when you're that close. ^^; and looks like you were in a low light area too.

Beautiful! My husband took a class of kids walking and camping on the moor many years ago. They were from a school in the east end of London and many hadn't see a sheep or a cow.
