Each week there is a Sunday. For many people this is still a day of rest though, increasingly over the years, it has become just another day of the week. In many ways this is good but in many ways it was good to have a day of rest. A day when things stopped. The month of August, is basically the year's Sunday. It is the month when most holidays are taken. I guess I'm talking about the Western world here as it is Summer whereas that is not the case in other parts of the world. So let's say I am just talking abut the part of the hemisphere that I inhabit. You will all have your own 'August' wherever you are.
August was the month when things stopped. All the workers had a break, usually at the same time. It was like a scheduled break in the industrial year. I believe New York used to empty as the people went away for their holidays. Because of the school year it is still the case in England that August is the month where things slow down. London is quieter in terms of workers but is busier in terms of tourism.
Holiday time becomes more important I think as people seem to work harder and longer than before. I'm not going back to the Victorian age here where there were no working conditions and employers could do what they wanted. I'm talking recent history. More is expected from you at work and often for less reward. So holiday time has become very important again. A time to step away and clear your head. Get those batteries re-charged. Everyone should have a time in their year when they can stop from their labour. I am well aware that the amount of holiday time you have from work can vary from country to country and also from your own circumstances.

New, fresh air to breathe, new sights to stimulate you eyes and mind, new ideas and experiences for your mind and brain.
I remember from my childhood only a couple of holidays when we went away. Most holidays were spent at home with my brothers and friends playing in the nearby fields on long Summer days that seemed to have no end. This is because I come from a poor family. Poor in financial terms anyway but very wealthy in all other respects. We did go the seaside twice I think. Once we stayed in a caravan at a holiday resort and played on the beach and on the pier in the amusement arcades as the rain lashed against the tin roofs drumming like a steel band. I have seen some old b/w photos which my brother looks after from when we were very small and were at the seaside in Wales I think. I don't remember that holiday at all though. When all is said and done though, the thing that it is the real reward on a holiday is that you can try to have in your head that for a short while......your time is your own. I am self employed and there are many days when I enjoy my work but even on those days...... I am fully aware that my time is not my own and, to me, that is one of the great gifts of holiday time. . As time went on and I went through school and into the world of work holidays became more important. The reason for them became more obvious too. Without them I'm sure I would go mad
I have now found a situation where I have some places I go to because they are familiar (and I love them), and a desire to explore new places. My need to fill my mind and heart with new experiences never fades and I just wish I had more time available to do both. It is true though that my next trip is always my next target. I do find happiness at home and I do find it in the small things in life as well as the large. The excitement comes from getting in my car or getting on a plane to begin a new adventure. I have some short trips planned for the rest of this year and then I am looking to next year. I am having great fun planning my next trip to Iceland and wondering where else I will venture.
Now let me share with you some wonderful treasure that I have found in the last few weeks. I thank you all for your creations, you are an inspiration to me in all that you do and in your constant support of my own pictures. For this I can never thank you all enough

Merry Christmas everyone.
Merry Christmas everyone. It has been a cold week here. Colder than we have seen for many a year. Even here, in the south of England, we had snow a week ago and it is still here because it has been so cold. I would say I love this weather if I didn't have to drive in it very early in the morning  I love the feeling of the cold biting at my fingers and toes and how my nose tingles and my eyes water. I love pulling on my thick socks and my big, heavy jumpers (sweaters). Pulling on my serious walking boots and zipping up my serious coat. I use the word serious because this is the weather these things were designed for. You couldn't wear this coat unless the temperature was below zero or you'd be too hot. My fleecy hat tops it off and I feel well protected but I can still feel how cold it is without actually freezing out there. The main roads have been cleared pretty well but the side roads have been left as have the pavements (sidewalks) which makes it quite exciting walking
The season of the witch.
Here we are just past Halloween. Last night was bonfire night over here where we have huge bonfires and fireworks displays. These events really do mark deep autumn time and the rapid approach of winter. It hasn't really been that cold yet but, in contrast to the previous dry months it has been very wet. To celebrate all this wetness I am going to the Isle Of Skye next weekend for a few days. I know I always joke about Scotland being wet so 'take your coat' when you go............well this year it has been very wet so it is going to be a challenging week. You know I don't mind a bit of rain but I am already preparing myself for the possibility of this being a bit of a wash out. You never know though. You have to get out there anyway because if you are not there you can't shoot it. So I'm going to put myself out here at least and see what happens. I have been thinking about the differences between Skye (which is the Inner Hebrides) and Harris and Lewis etc. (the Outer Hebrides) and I
A Hebridean Odyssey
And I am back from my first trip to the Outer Hebrides. Here is my GPS trace for the time I was there. I left Oban for Castlebay in the south on the Monday and then worked my way up to leave Stornaway for Ullapool on the Wednesday nine days later. The GPS failed on the last ferry to Ullapool because it was a much newer ferry and all the electronics from the bridge interfered with my little unit. The Outer Hebrides or the Western Isles (also known as Na h-Innse Gall or the Long Isle) is a group of islands that lie off the north west coast of Scotland. The Isle Of Skye lies between the Outer Hebrides and the mainland. On my trip I got the Calmac ferry from Oban to Castlebay on the Isle of Barra in the south. I was there Monday and Tuesday night then moved on by ferry to Eriskay and a drive through South Uist, Benbecula into north Uist. I stayed there Wednesday and Thursday night then on by ferry from Berneray to Leverburgh on Harris. I stayed near Tarbert for two nights. Then on
Island hopping.
Ladies and gentlemen the excitement is building here. On Saturday I am heading off to the Outer Hebrides for a couple of weeks. I will be island hopping as I try to see as much as I can of the islands. This is the first time I will have been there and I can't wait. Although I have been looking and doing research I always find that nothing really prepares you properly. It is not till you are there that you can get a feel of the place and try to become one with it. On Saturday I'm driving to Fort William and then on Sunday I go to Oban. It is from here that I get the ferry to the Isle of Barra on Monday morning. I spend a day or so here before catching another ferry to Eriskay then drive across the causeway to South Uist and then onto Benbecula also reached by a causeway. I then stay in North Uist. There are six islands here all joined by causeways. From there on Friday off to Harris. There for a couple of days then on to Lewis on the Sunday. I'm there till the Wednesday when I head
