You know I used to think we were all lucky to not live in the early or middle part of the 20th century. We were not alive to experience the two World Wars. In truth though, it seems that wars, violence and hate are with us all the time. The terrorist attacks in Belgium are the latest example of a hate war using indiscriminate violence against ordinary people going about their normal daily business. Where ever you live in the world, Belgium, Paris, Turkey, Madrid, New York, London.....................anywhere, you can't help but be affected by the tragedies that keep unfolding. It fills me with sadness.
If you were to visit this planet as a stranger you could be forgiven for thinking that, due to the actions of a minority, this is an ugly world full of loathing and suspicion and hate. This is not the case though.
It strengthens my resolve to find beauty in this world. I spend my life looking for beauty, love and compassion. It is what I have done all my life so far and it is what I will continue to do.
Light must always conquer dark and Love must always conquer Hate. We must have hope and optimism for without these we have nothing but despair. The evil must not win.
I have met so many people here who prove to me, on a daily basis, that there is much love in the world. There is love, hope, compassion for one's fellow man/woman, tenderness, passion, creativity and happiness. I find all of that and more from my friends here at dA. We all live in this world, in various countries, and we all share this common love of art in the first place. Then we find people who become important and close to us. The feeling of community amongst my friends here is not something I was expecting from dA. I thought it would be a place I showed my pictures and maybe some people would like them. I did not expect to make such close friendships. I did not expect my heart to be touched by some of the most amazing, wonderful and loving people I have ever met anywhere. You people really show me what being here on this planet can be about. When I am feeling low there are always people here who will give me a lift. People who pick me up. They don't even know they have done it most times but I appreciate you all for it. Some of you I feel like I've know all my life. There is a closeness and a bond that I hope will never break. I won't name names as it's embarrassing to miss anyone out but you must know who you are
I find that in sad times I get sentimental. I have had my own sad times to deal with recently and this all gets put into perspective by the recent tragedies in Brussels. We all have our own battles in life though and we have to find our own way forward. That is the only direction to go though. Forward. I am so happy to have you all beside me as I make my own way in my life in this troubled world.
So I don't want this to be end on a sad note. Easter is a time for celebration in the Christian faith. If you don't celebrate Easter then please, pray for peace in your own way. If you do celebrate Easter then also pray for peace.
I will be out there with my camera trying to capture the beauty I can find in the world to share with you. I hope you will enjoy my travels and feel the love I have for this planet and nature from my humble pictures. I thank you for each and every favourite and comment. I will always reply to a comment as I love that you have taken the time to write Much love to you all. You enrich my life
And now I would like to share some art with you. All of these pieces of art have been made by amazing people and I'm sure they would love to hear from you if you like what they have created. Please, if you have time, let them know. Thank you very much for reading this
You know what? I feel better already just for looking through your wonderful pictures Thank you all again for adding so much to my life with your creativity, zest for life, friendship and love.
Thank you for reading this and remember, spread the love. Keep creating, keep loving and keep your passion. Long for peace.
Merry Christmas everyone.
Merry Christmas everyone. It has been a cold week here. Colder than we have seen for many a year. Even here, in the south of England, we had snow a week ago and it is still here because it has been so cold. I would say I love this weather if I didn't have to drive in it very early in the morning  I love the feeling of the cold biting at my fingers and toes and how my nose tingles and my eyes water. I love pulling on my thick socks and my big, heavy jumpers (sweaters). Pulling on my serious walking boots and zipping up my serious coat. I use the word serious because this is the weather these things were designed for. You couldn't wear this coat unless the temperature was below zero or you'd be too hot. My fleecy hat tops it off and I feel well protected but I can still feel how cold it is without actually freezing out there. The main roads have been cleared pretty well but the side roads have been left as have the pavements (sidewalks) which makes it quite exciting walking
The season of the witch.
Here we are just past Halloween. Last night was bonfire night over here where we have huge bonfires and fireworks displays. These events really do mark deep autumn time and the rapid approach of winter. It hasn't really been that cold yet but, in contrast to the previous dry months it has been very wet. To celebrate all this wetness I am going to the Isle Of Skye next weekend for a few days. I know I always joke about Scotland being wet so 'take your coat' when you go............well this year it has been very wet so it is going to be a challenging week. You know I don't mind a bit of rain but I am already preparing myself for the possibility of this being a bit of a wash out. You never know though. You have to get out there anyway because if you are not there you can't shoot it. So I'm going to put myself out here at least and see what happens. I have been thinking about the differences between Skye (which is the Inner Hebrides) and Harris and Lewis etc. (the Outer Hebrides) and I
A Hebridean Odyssey
And I am back from my first trip to the Outer Hebrides. Here is my GPS trace for the time I was there. I left Oban for Castlebay in the south on the Monday and then worked my way up to leave Stornaway for Ullapool on the Wednesday nine days later. The GPS failed on the last ferry to Ullapool because it was a much newer ferry and all the electronics from the bridge interfered with my little unit. The Outer Hebrides or the Western Isles (also known as Na h-Innse Gall or the Long Isle) is a group of islands that lie off the north west coast of Scotland. The Isle Of Skye lies between the Outer Hebrides and the mainland. On my trip I got the Calmac ferry from Oban to Castlebay on the Isle of Barra in the south. I was there Monday and Tuesday night then moved on by ferry to Eriskay and a drive through South Uist, Benbecula into north Uist. I stayed there Wednesday and Thursday night then on by ferry from Berneray to Leverburgh on Harris. I stayed near Tarbert for two nights. Then on
Island hopping.
Ladies and gentlemen the excitement is building here. On Saturday I am heading off to the Outer Hebrides for a couple of weeks. I will be island hopping as I try to see as much as I can of the islands. This is the first time I will have been there and I can't wait. Although I have been looking and doing research I always find that nothing really prepares you properly. It is not till you are there that you can get a feel of the place and try to become one with it. On Saturday I'm driving to Fort William and then on Sunday I go to Oban. It is from here that I get the ferry to the Isle of Barra on Monday morning. I spend a day or so here before catching another ferry to Eriskay then drive across the causeway to South Uist and then onto Benbecula also reached by a causeway. I then stay in North Uist. There are six islands here all joined by causeways. From there on Friday off to Harris. There for a couple of days then on to Lewis on the Sunday. I'm there till the Wednesday when I head
